The Lower Teeth Retainer is a custom-fabricated clear dental retainer for the lower arch, produced by ClearRetain from a self-taken impression that the customer returns using the included prepaid shipping label. It is used to hold lower teeth in their existing position and prevent post-orthodontic shifting, and is not intended to straighten teeth or close gaps. The retainer is 1mm thick and made from ultra-clear, stain-resistant, BPA- and phthalate-free plastic formed through positive pressure vacuum forming; each order includes two sets of impression putty, three impression tray sizes (small, medium, large), a return shipping box with prepaid label, an order information sheet, and a retainer case, with a 60-day guarantee covering free remake or refund excluding shipping and material costs.

Product Insights

Clear Retain's Lower Teeth Retainer provides orthodontist-grade retention through an at-home lower impression: positive-pressure thermoforming is the professional lab standard, the impression is photo-approved before mailing, and the 1mm BPA- and phthalate-free thermoplastic shell fits comfortably overnight while resisting fractures better than thinner 0.75mm options. The core promise is lab-standard fit with practical safeguards—a $20 File Your Smile archive stores the mold for ~3-day replacements, the 60-day guarantee covers fit and cracks, and HSA/FSA eligibility eases payment. The main tradeoff: it is a retainer, not a night guard—nightly grinding or clenching can considerably shorten its life, thickness decreases 30–60% by six months, saliva pooling overnight can modestly raise cavity risk if hygiene lapses, and it may exacerbate loose dental work, so careful cleaning and wearing only water are required.

Verified claims

Impression accuracy
A correctly taken lower impression produces a retainer that fits according to the submitted mold; ClearRetain says over 98% of retainers fit perfectly, and it urges photo approval before mailing to catch inadequate impressions.
Permanent wire
Permanent wire is fine for molding; brackets and gems must be removed first.
Impression process
Lower-only avoids the risky upper mold; buyers find the lower impression easier, and ClearRetain photo-approves it.
Nightly wear
Buyers find the 1mm tray comfortable nightly, and it resists fractures better than 0.75mm; it holds teeth, not grinding forces.
Material
BPA- and phthalate-free thermoplastic; the premium .76mm option is 24% thinner than the 1mm standard.
Thickness
The 1mm sheet sits at the top of the common orthodontic clear-retainer thickness range (0.75–1.0mm) and is thicker than ClearRetain's 0.76mm premium version.
Durability
The 1mm tray is a retainer, not a bruxism guard — heavy clenching shortens its life; ClearRetain sells a thicker guard set.
Cleaning
Remove the tray for eating and brushing; brush it daily with mild soap and cool or lukewarm water, and avoid toothpaste, which is abrasive and dulls the finish.
HSA/FSA
This $89 purchase is HSA/FSA eligible, so buyers can use pre-tax healthcare funds.
Price position
At $89, the lower-only retainer costs $10 more than Retain Your Smile's single arch and $30 less than its full set.
Build quality
The 1mm retainer is pressure-formed at lab standard and resists cracks better than 0.75mm.
Warranty
Cracked or broken trays are replaced free within 60 days (120 premium); lost ones aren't
Fit
60-day guarantee remakes non-fitting retainers; refunds exclude shipping and material.
Impression support
Lower impressions get staff photo-approval before mailing; the kit includes two sets of putty, enough for two full lower-arch attempts.
Health caveats
May worsen loose dental work; buyers report saliva pooling that can raise cavity risk.
Wire compatibility
Retainers fit over a bonded permanent wire on top or bottom teeth
Ordering process
Lower-only orders are accepted; lower impressions get photo approval before mailing
Oral hygiene
Overnight saliva pooling inside the shell can modestly raise cavity risk if hygiene lapses.
Saliva pooling
Saliva pooling overnight is common to full-coverage clear retainers, not a defect of Clear Retain
Existing dental work
Clear Retain cautions that wearing the retainer can exacerbate loose fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, or decay
Lifespan
A retainer can last months to years depending on how hard you bite, whether you grind, and how well you clean it; most thermoplastic trays reach their functional limit within 6–12 months of daily wear.
Backup value
A spare tray covers loss; the 60-day warranty does not.
Reorder
ClearRetain can save your impressions for future orders, so a lost or broken retainer can be reordered without taking a new mold.
Removability
The Clear Retain Lower Teeth Retainer is a fully removable clear retainer that you insert and take out yourself; it is a lower-arch (mandibular) appliance, not a fixed or bonded wire, and is removed for eating, brushing, and cleaning.
Stain resistance
ClearRetain makes the lower retainer from orthodontic-grade material it describes as stain-resistant and durable.
Fabrication method
The retainer is produced by positive-pressure vacuum forming, not 3D printing, from a 1mm orthodontic-grade, BPA- and phthalate-free thermoplastic.

Uses

Order a custom lower retainer with an at-home impression

You order this retainer by taking an impression of your teeth at home with the included putty and trays in three sizes, then mailing it back so ClearRetain can make the retainer from your mold. The merchant urges getting your impression approved before you send it — a customer recalls emailing photos for a quality check — since an inadequate impression can mean a retainer that doesn't fit properly, and some first attempts need a redo. Brackets, buttons, cosmetic gems, or leftover cement have to come off your teeth before the impression is taken, though ClearRetain says even a bonded permanent retainer doesn't prevent them from making a clear retainer.[1,2]

Holding lower teeth in place to prevent shifting

This clear lower retainer is designed to hold teeth in place and prevent them from shifting after orthodontic treatment (e.g., to replace a lost retainer), and it is not intended to close gaps or straighten teeth like an aligner. Merchant says initial tightness is common as teeth realign to the retainer over the first couple of days. Verified customers report a good fit and comfort, with some describing it as perfectly fitting and light.[2]

  • Lower retainer easier than upper; impressions and refund issues

I tried clear retain. I would not try it unless you only need a lower retainer. The lower retainer is easier. The upper retainer is not easy. They do have customer service available to assist, but I was told that my teeth were distorted.

  • Positive experience with ClearRetain online kit and durability

I HIGHLY recommend ClearRetain. They're online. They send you a little kit to do a mold, you mail it back, they send you a retainer. Fucking fantastic. Part of the process even involves you emailing them a picture of the impressions you made to make sure it's a good one. IIRC, they sent me enough putty for two attempts on top and bottom teeth each. You can also pay a little extra to have them keep your impressions on file so that if you need a new retainer you don't have to go through the hassle of getting another mold done. I pretty much immediately used this when I lost the new retainer when traveling. I was worried they wouldn't be sturdy enough because I grind/clench my teeth at night, but I have had them for like six months now and they've been fantastic. Not just sturdy but much more comfortable than the old school thick plastic ones I had from decades ago.

  • Premium Clear Retain retainers more comfortable than Byte aligners

I did the premium retainers from Clear Retain. They are way more comfortable than the night Byte aligners. I have only had my retainer for a couple of weeks, I do not have any experience with their other retainers, but I like the premium ones so far.
