The Lower Teeth Retainer is a clear, custom-fit dental retainer for your lower arch, used to maintain teeth alignment after orthodontic treatment or replace a lost or broken retainer. It features a stain-resistant, BPA- and phthalate-free material with a 1mm thickness, manufactured via positive pressure vacuum forming. An at-home impression kit with putty, trays, and prepaid shipping is included, making it a low-cost alternative to dental-office retainers, though it is not designed to straighten teeth or close gaps.

Product Insights

Clear Retain's Lower Teeth Retainer provides orthodontist-grade retention through an at-home lower impression: positive-pressure thermoforming is the professional lab standard, the impression is photo-approved before mailing, and the 1mm BPA- and phthalate-free thermoplastic shell fits comfortably overnight while resisting fractures better than thinner 0.75mm options. The core promise is lab-standard fit with practical safeguards—a $20 File Your Smile archive stores the mold for ~3-day replacements, the 60-day guarantee covers fit and cracks, and HSA/FSA eligibility eases payment. The main tradeoff: it is a retainer, not a night guard—nightly grinding or clenching can considerably shorten its life, thickness decreases 30–60% by six months, saliva pooling overnight can modestly raise cavity risk if hygiene lapses, and it may exacerbate loose dental work, so careful cleaning and wearing only water are required.

Verified claims

Impression accuracy
A correctly taken lower impression fits as well as an in-office mold.
Permanent wire
Permanent wire is fine for molding; brackets and gems must be removed first.
File Your Smile
$20 File Your Smile archives the mold; replacements ship in about 3 days without a new mold.
Impression process
Lower-only avoids the risky upper mold; buyers find the lower impression easier, and ClearRetain photo-approves it.
Nightly wear
Buyers find the 1mm tray comfortable nightly, and it resists fractures better than 0.75mm; it holds teeth, not grinding forces.
Material
BPA- and phthalate-free thermoplastic; the premium .76mm option is 24% thinner than the 1mm standard.
Thickness
The 1mm sheet forms a ~0.7mm shell — the standard professional retainer gauge.
Bruxism suitability
Not rated as a night guard, but one grinder reports 6 months of sturdy wear.
Durability
The 1mm tray is a retainer, not a bruxism guard — heavy clenching shortens its life; ClearRetain sells a thicker guard set.
Replacement
Grinding cracks fall outside normal-use replacement; a $20 stored scan reorders in about 3 business days.
Cleaning
Water-only while worn; brush daily with mild soap, not toothpaste.
HSA/FSA
IRS classifies retainers as dental devices; this $89 purchase is HSA-eligible tax-free.
Insurance coordination
Only the balance dental insurance doesn't cover is HSA-reimbursable.
Reimbursement timing
HSA reimbursements have no deadline, but FSA funds must be spent by year-end.
Installment reimbursement
Each Affirm installment is a separate HSA-qualified expense, reimbursable monthly.
Price position
At $89, the lower-only retainer costs $10 more than Retain Your Smile's single arch and $30 less than its full set.
Build quality
The 1mm retainer is pressure-formed at lab standard and resists cracks better than 0.75mm.
Warranty
Cracked or broken trays are replaced free within 60 days (120 premium); lost ones aren't
Wear life
At 1mm, nightly wear loses 30–60% of tray thickness by about six months
Fit
60-day guarantee remakes non-fitting retainers; refunds exclude shipping and material.
Impression support
Lower impressions get staff photo-approval before mailing; kit includes practice putty.
Health caveats
May worsen loose dental work; buyers report saliva pooling that can raise cavity risk.
Wire compatibility
Retainers fit over a bonded permanent wire on top or bottom teeth
Ordering process
Lower-only orders are accepted; lower impressions get photo approval before mailing
Oral hygiene
Overnight saliva pooling inside the shell can modestly raise cavity risk if hygiene lapses.
Saliva pooling
Saliva pooling overnight is common to full-coverage clear retainers, not a defect of Clear Retain
Care
Use mild soap rather than toothpaste, and drink only water while wearing it
Existing dental work
Clear Retain cautions that wearing the retainer can exacerbate loose fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, or decay
Lifespan
Typical lifespan is 6 months to 3 years, up to 5 with consistent care.
Grinding sensitivity
Nightly grinding or clenching can considerably shorten the 1mm tray's life; ClearRetain steers bruxers to a thicker grind-guard.
Backup value
A spare tray covers loss; the 60-day warranty does not.
Reorder
File Your Smile stores impressions; a lost tray ships in about 3 business days, no new mold.

  • Lower retainer easier than upper; impressions and refund issues

I tried clear retain. I would not try it unless you only need a lower retainer. The lower retainer is easier. The upper retainer is not easy. They do have customer service available to assist, but I was told that my teeth were distorted.

  • Positive experience with ClearRetain online kit and durability

I HIGHLY recommend ClearRetain. They're online. They send you a little kit to do a mold, you mail it back, they send you a retainer. Fucking fantastic. Part of the process even involves you emailing them a picture of the impressions you made to make sure it's a good one. IIRC, they sent me enough putty for two attempts on top and bottom teeth each. You can also pay a little extra to have them keep your impressions on file so that if you need a new retainer you don't have to go through the hassle of getting another mold done. I pretty much immediately used this when I lost the new retainer when traveling. I was worried they wouldn't be sturdy enough because I grind/clench my teeth at night, but I have had them for like six months now and they've been fantastic. Not just sturdy but much more comfortable than the old school thick plastic ones I had from decades ago.

  • Premium Clear Retain retainers more comfortable than Byte aligners

I did the premium retainers from Clear Retain. They are way more comfortable than the night Byte aligners. I have only had my retainer for a couple of weeks, I do not have any experience with their other retainers, but I like the premium ones so far.
